Vision Therapy Enhanced Academic Performance – Camryn’s Success Story

As summer approaches, we encourage parents to call and schedule a Developmental Vision Evaluation to determine if there are any visual problems affecting a child’s academic performance, before this upcoming school year!

When visual problems get in the way of educational performance, parents may not associate common learning problems with their child’s vision. When a child has a vision-related learning/reading problem, they often struggle with:

  • Reading
  • Attention and concentration problems
  • Handwriting
  • Frequent letter reversals
  • Homework is a battle

In education, vision is the dominant sensory system as 80% of learning is done through the visual system. Deficits within this system often decrease a student’s reading and learning abilities.

This means, if a child is showing difficulties in educational performance, parents should FIRST find out if their child has the necessary visual skills to succeed in school with a Developmental Vision Evaluation

Below, one parent explains how they discovered a vision-related problem was affecting school work and their vision therapy journey.

Camryn’s Success Story

By: Sarah (Camryn’s Mom)

Since preschool, Camryn has struggled with her school work. She was consistently far behind her peers in her reading, math, and handwriting skills. This gap continued to increase as she went through school. However, this was not due to her lack of effort. She was receiving interventions in almost all subject areas at school. Homework was a horrible time for us as a family and, as her parents, we were at a loss as to how to help her. As time went on, we also started to see increased anxiety and attention issues at school. Her teachers suspected ADHD. However, once we had Camryn evaluated, we discovered that it was not ADHD that was causing her frustrations, but rather a combination of visual processing deficits, including Convergence Insufficiency, Accommodative Dysfunction, and Oculomotor Dysfunction.

Once Camryn started therapy at Wow Vision Therapy, we started seeing improvements within weeks. We were truly amazed! I will never forget the day that Camryn brought home her first 90% on a reading quiz. She was so proud of herself! Since completing therapy, Camryn is consistently bringing home A’s and B’s on her school work! She is showing great improvement in math and spelling as well. She has gone up a grade level in reading. For the first time in her life, I am able to read and understand my third grader’s handwriting. She is reading for fun and actually comprehending what she is reading, which she was never able to do before.

Most importantly, Camryn is PROUD OF HERSELF, and she is able to articulate what a huge difference therapy has made in her life. We would highly recommend Wow Vision Therapy to any family whose child is struggling. We could not be more thankful for the difference they have made in our daughter’s life!
