When Reading Is Frustrating: Find Out If Eye Coordination and Visual Processing Need an Upgrade
As parents, we often assume that if a child has passed a school vision screening or can see the letters on an eye chart, their vision is working properly.
But what if reading is still a daily struggle?

When Reading Feels Harder Than It Should
Many parents assume that if their child can see clearly and passes a vision screening, vision is not contributing to learning difficulties.

To read comfortably and efficiently, a child must be able to:
- Coordinate both eyes accurately
- Maintain focus on near work
- Move their eyes smoothly across a page
- Process visual information quickly and accurately
When one or more of these visual skills is not functioning efficiently, reading can become difficult, tiring, and frustrating.
Common Signs That Eye Coordination May Be Contributing
Parents often tell us their child:
- Dislikes reading
- Complains that reading is hard
- Loses their place while reading
- Uses a finger to keep track of words
- Skips lines or words
- Has difficulty with reading comprehension
- Experiences headaches or eye strain
- Homework takes significantly longer than expected
- Reads slowly despite being intelligent and capable
These signs may indicate a functional vision problem involving eye teaming, focusing, eye movements, or visual processing.
What Is Visual Processing?
Visual processing refers to how the brain interprets and organizes information received through the eyes.
Visual processing skills help us:
- Recognize words quickly
- Remember what we see
- Understand spatial relationships
- Follow sequences accurately
- Integrate visual information with movement and learning
These skills are critical for reading, writing, spelling, note-taking, classroom learning, and many everyday activities.
A child can be bright, motivated, and hardworking yet still struggle if visual processing skills are not fully developed.
Looking Beyond the Eye Chart
One of the most common misconceptions about vision is that 20/20 eyesight means the visual system is functioning perfectly. In reality, eyesight is only one part of vision.
Eye coordination, focusing, eye movements, visual processing, and visual-vestibular integration all contribute to a child’s ability to learn efficiently and comfortably.
When these skills are not working together effectively, the effects can show up in the classroom, during homework, and even in a child’s confidence.
